Andy had been brewing beers in his cellar for years when he read an article about the Brouwland beer competition in October 2010. He decided to take a chance and sent his version of a Trappist beer, a dark malty beer of 10%. In March 2011 it was announced that his beer had been selected for the final. Early April 2011 it was finally the final. The seven finalists were tasted by beer experts, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and a few Belgian brewmasters such as Paul Arnott (Dubuisson) and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and rated as one, a lot was noticed. There was not much talking among themselves until they started his beer (the last seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All the jury members started talking to each other and two of them even gave Andy a thumbs up. Then he knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberation, the winner was announced… Flying Horse Brewers from Oedelem presented their Préaris Quadrupel and thus the history of the Vliegende Paard Brouwers began.
